Biwater Restores Central London Bath-House
20 September 2009
Work has commenced on the refurbishment of the 1920s bath-house just off of Oxford Street in Central London. Biwater Leisure was awarded the contract to completely replace all of the filtration equipment for the marble lined pool. The contract is challenging as the 1920s design of pool circulation does not meet modern day health and safety standards, so innovative ways of achieving safe bathing water quality whilst preserving the structure of the pool are being applied.
Work is already underway, despite being delayed by the discovery of human skeletons. The original pool building was constructed over a graveyard and the remains have come to light during excavations. These have now been removed by city archaeologists and work has resumed. The baths, which originally opened on 17th April 1931 included a first class swimming bath 100 feet by 35 feet, a smaller second-class bath, slipper baths, public laundry, maternity and child welfare centre.
The new filtration plant, consisting of sand filtration, ultraviolet treatment and chemical dosing, is anticipated to be completed by April 2010.
